Ceftriaxone  1000 mg

Ceftriaxone is also among the most popular antibiotics due to its very slight chance of having side effects and because it will treat several bacterial infections. Ceftriaxone comes in injectable form given in the veins or muscles, so most of the time, it is given in a hospital or a clinic environment (such as a nursing home, provider's office). However, in some instances, it may also be used at home. The dose varies based on the severity and type of your infection, but it is typically administered once a day. If you are allergic to penicillin, you may still be able to take ceftriaxone based on your response to penicillin.

How Ceftriaxone works?

Ceftriaxone is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It kills bacteria by stopping them from creating a covering around themselves for protection.

Pharmacist tips for Ceftriaxone

  • Ceftriaxone may lead to diarrhea. It usually disappears once you have stopped taking the antibiotic. But immediately call your provider if you begin to develop watery diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, tiredness, or stomach pains at any time during treatment or after you stop taking ceftriaxone. They may be a sign of infectious diarrhea that could be dangerous and should be treated promptly.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if you or your loved ones experience changes in your behavior, including confusion, hallucinations (seeing things that are not there), and difficulty speaking. These may be signs of nervous system side effects due to ceftriaxone.
  • If you get additional signs of a sickness or if the symptoms are worse, talk with your provider. Ceftriaxone will not help if your illness is caused by a fungus or virus, only if you have an infection due to bacteria. If required, your provider will prescribe some other medication to fight viral infections or fungal infections for you.
  • If you need ceftriaxone treatment for a long period of time, it is possible that your health insurance may allow you to administer the drug at home. Be sure to carefully take the directions given by your doctor if you are allowed to give yourself treatment. Your doctor may have you do injections from vials of the medication that require administration after being away from cold  or premixed bags that are ready to inject.
  • If you are taking ceftriaxone at home for treatment over some time, be sure to remind yourself when to take your doses. Get all of your doses of ceftriaxone and complete your course of treatment even if you begin to feel better. Otherwise, your infection may worsen or become more difficult to treat.
  • Mark your provider appointments and blood work on your calendar. This will allow your provider to ensure that ceftriaxone is working to cure your infection and that it is as safe as possible for you.
